Garador Garage Door Measuring Guide
Measure Your Garador
Door Correctly.
This guide is specifically for Garador garage doors. Before ordering, carefully measure your garage opening and understand how those measurements relate to Garador's nominal door and frame sizes.
Sizing and installation requirements can vary between manufacturers. If you are ordering a Hörmann, SWS or another manufacturer's garage door, use the measuring guidance provided for that specific range.
Get Ready to Measure.
Accurate measurements are essential when ordering a made-to-order garage door. Never rely on an estimated opening size.
Use a reliable tape measure long enough to cover the complete garage opening.
Record your dimensions in millimetres for accuracy and consistency.
Record every measurement as you go rather than relying on memory.
Multiple readings help identify openings that are not perfectly square.
What You Need to Measure.
Don't take just one width and one height. Measure the opening at several points and check the available space around it.
Opening Width
Measure the clear brick-to-brick width of the garage opening.
- Measure across the top.
- Measure across the middle.
- Measure across the bottom.
- Record all three measurements.
Opening Height
Measure vertically from the finished floor level to the underside of the garage opening.
- Measure on the left.
- Measure in the centre.
- Measure on the right.
- Record any differences.
Headroom
Measure the clear space above the opening to the lowest obstruction.
- Check lintels and beams.
- Check lights and pipework.
- Check shelving or storage.
- Consider automation equipment if required.
Side Room
Measure the clear space beside the opening on both the left and right sides.
- Measure both sides separately.
- Check for pipes and obstructions.
- Check the fixing surfaces.
- Record the available space on each side.
Opening Size vs.
Garador Door Size.
This is one of the most important things to understand before ordering a Garador Up & Over door.
Brick Opening
This is the physical garage opening you measure on site from brickwork to brickwork.
Nominal Door Size
Garador Up & Over doors are specified using the nominal door size — the door size between the steel or timber frame.
The dimensions required depend on the frame, operating mechanism and how the door will be positioned within the garage opening.
Between or Behind
the Brickwork?
Where the Garador frame will be positioned changes how your measured opening relates to the overall frame dimensions.
Between Brickwork
The door and frame are positioned within the garage opening. The complete frame therefore needs to fit inside the available opening with the required fitting clearance.
Behind Brickwork
The frame is positioned behind the brick reveals. This changes how the clear opening relates to the nominal door and overall frame dimensions.
Ordering a
Pre-Framed Door?
A factory pre-framed Garador door has an overall frame size larger than its nominal door size.
The overall frame width can also differ depending on whether the door uses a Canopy or Retractable operating mechanism.
Always check the appropriate Garador sizing information for the exact door specification you intend to order.
Remember the fitting clearance.
Garador's published overall frame dimensions do not include fitting clearance. For a pre-framed door fitted between brickwork, allow at least 10mm over the overall frame width and 5mm over the overall frame height.
Before You Order.
Make sure you can confidently tick each of these off before confirming your Garador garage door.
Ask your installer before ordering.
If you're unsure which Garador size to select, have the opening checked by a competent garage-door installer before placing your order. This is particularly important for uneven openings, unusual construction or purpose-made sizes.
Ordering another garage door brand?
Do not automatically apply the dimensions or sizing information on this page to another manufacturer. Hörmann, SWS and other garage door ranges may use different sizing, frame and installation requirements. Always use the measuring information provided for the manufacturer and door range you are ordering.
