Garador Sectional Garage Door Measuring Guide
Sectional Garage Door
Measuring Guide
Accurate measurements are essential when ordering your Garador Sectional garage door. This guide explains how to measure your garage opening, headroom, sideroom and internal garage depth before configuring your new door.
Measure the
Opening Carefully.
Garador Sectional garage doors are generally designed to fit behind the garage opening. This allows the door to rise vertically before travelling horizontally beneath the garage ceiling.
Because of this, the opening width and height are only part of the measurement process. You must also check the available sideroom, headroom and garage depth.
Measure in several positions wherever possible. Brickwork, render, floor levels and ceilings are not always perfectly square, so never rely on a single measurement.
Measure Your Garage Opening
Take all measurements in millimetres. Measure the opening itself first, followed by the available space around and behind it.
Opening Width
Measure the brick-to-brick opening width at the top, middle and bottom. Record the smallest measurement.
Opening Height
Measure from the finished floor level to the underside of the lintel at the left, centre and right. Record the smallest measurement.
Sideroom
Measure the clear wall space immediately behind the opening on both sides. Garador Sectional doors generally require at least 90 mm each side.
Headroom
Measure vertically from the underside of the lintel to the lowest obstruction above it, including beams, pipes, lights and ceiling structures.
Smallest brick-to-brick opening width.
Smallest floor-to-lintel opening height.
Clear internal wall space on both sides.
Clear space above the garage opening.
Check Your Headroom
The required headroom depends on the Sectional spring and track arrangement selected for your door.
| Track / Spring Arrangement | Manual Door | With GaraMatic | Sideroom |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Tension Z Spring Common on smaller Sectional doors. |
100 mm minimum headroom | 115 mm minimum headroom | 90 mm each side |
|
Torsion N Spring Standard on larger compatible doors. |
210 mm minimum headroom | 210 mm minimum headroom | 90 mm each side |
|
Low Headroom Torsion L Track Used where headroom is restricted. |
100 mm minimum headroom | 115 mm minimum headroom | 90 mm each side |
Do not automatically choose a smaller door. Garador offers compatible low-headroom track arrangements for selected Sectional doors. Enter your measurements accurately in the configurator so the appropriate options can be identified.
Measure the Garage Depth
Sectional doors travel horizontally beneath the ceiling after opening, so sufficient clear space is required inside the garage.
Minimum internal depth for the standard manual Sectional track arrangement.
Minimum garage depth for an automated door within this height range.
Minimum garage depth typically required for the corresponding GaraMatic boom arrangement.
Measure to the nearest obstruction, not simply to the rear garage wall. Be aware of ceiling joists, lights, storage systems, loft hatches, pipework, beams and existing garage-door equipment.
Check the Floor & Opening
The garage floor and structural opening should be assessed before ordering, particularly where the building is older or has recently been altered.
Measure from the final floor surface, not from an unfinished slab that will later receive screed, tiles or another finish.
Check whether the floor slopes significantly across the garage opening as this can affect the bottom weather seal.
Confirm that the reveals and lintel provide suitable structural fixing locations for the frame and tracks.
Remove or account for pipes, cables, shelves and other items occupying the required sideroom.
Make sure the horizontal tracks and GaraMatic operator have a clear route into the garage.
Compare measurements at different positions and check the diagonals if the opening appears noticeably out of square.
Behind-the-Opening Installation
Garador Sectional garage doors are primarily designed to install behind the structural garage opening. This helps provide full drive-through width and allows the vertical tracks to sit behind the reveals.
A different fixing arrangement may be required. Garador offers a special anchor set for suitable applications, and cover profiles may also be required. If your installation cannot sit behind the reveals, confirm the fitting arrangement before ordering.
Record Everything Before Ordering
